When there is not enough room in the dental arch, teeth may overlap, rotate, or erupt out of line. Orthodontic treatment can gradually move those teeth into better positions. How space is created depends on the individual mouth rather than simply pushing every tooth outward.
Spaces can develop because of tooth size, tooth position, missing teeth, or the way the dental arches formed. Some gaps can be closed orthodontically. Others need a broader restorative plan because simply moving the teeth together would not solve the underlying issue.
You finished braces years ago. Your teeth looked straight. Then the retainer disappeared into a drawer somewhere. It happens. Teeth can gradually shift after previous orthodontic treatment, and clear aligners may sometimes be used to correct that relapse.
Orthodontics is not purely cosmetic. The relationship between the upper and lower teeth affects how forces are distributed when you bite and chew. Selected overbite, open bite, crossbite, and other bite concerns may be addressed orthodontically depending on their cause and complexity.
Sometimes the smile is generally straight except for one tooth that turns, sits forward, or appears noticeably out of line. Moving the tooth itself may provide a more conservative solution than covering the appearance with a veneer or substantial bonding.
Orthodontics can sometimes simplify treatment that comes later. Moving a tooth into a better position before veneers, bonding, crowns, or implant treatment may improve proportions and reduce how much natural tooth structure needs to be altered.

How It Works

We evaluate tooth position, spacing, crowding, the relationship between the upper and lower teeth, gum health, and existing dental work. Orthodontic treatment works best when the mouth is healthy enough to support tooth movement.
Digital scans, photographs, and dental imaging may be used depending on the treatment being considered. These records help us understand where the teeth are starting and plan where they need to move.
If clear aligners are appropriate, we can discuss the expected movement, treatment sequence, approximate timeline, attachments or other features that may be required, and what will be expected from you during treatment. If the case needs another approach, that conversation happens here too.
Orthodontic treatment is not something we simply hand over and forget about. Progress needs to be monitored. Teeth do not always respond exactly as a digital simulation predicts, so the plan may occasionally need to be adjusted as treatment progresses.
Teeth naturally tend to move after active orthodontic treatment. Retention is therefore part of the treatment plan. We will explain how retainers should be used to help maintain the new tooth positions once active movement is complete.
